Severe Weather Awareness Week 2017

Ohio’s Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 19-25, 2017

To promote community preparedness for severe weather that could impact Hamilton County, Hamilton County EMHSA will be partaking in Severe Weather Awareness Week in a few different ways! Using our social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) we will be pushing out helpful safety tips and severe weather information, so that Hamilton County residents can gather useful knowledge.

For the Kids

Preparedness is a whole community effort! Getting kids involved and informed about severe weather is important to securing the resiliency of any community. To encourage the goal of preparedness among students, we are happy to announce that we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Severe Weather Awareness Week Poster Contest! The contest runs from February 22-March 17, and any 4th or 5th grade student in Hamilton County is eligible to participate. Prizes for winning posters include: reporting the evening weather with WLWT Chief Meteorologist Kevin Robinson, personal guided tours of the National Weather Service facility in Wilmington, OH, and the opportunity for your work of art to be displayed around the County!

Contest Rules

  1. Entry is open to all Hamilton County elementary school students in GRADES 4 AND 5 in public, private, and charter schools, as well as any students being homeschooled.
  2. Poster theme should depict what severe weather in Ohio means to the student and/or what actions to take to prepare and stay safe.
  3. Creativity is the key. Individual work is encouraged. Posters with stencils, traced, computer- generated or commercially manufactured stick-on lettering or images will be disqualified.
  4. Poster should be no larger than 11”x14.” Those larger than the identified size may be disqualified.
  5. Students should use only crayon, markers, colored pencils, or watercolor/acrylic paint.

When creating your poster, please focus on one the following themes as guidance:

  • Severe weather in Hamilton County
  • Snow Emergencies
  • Tornadoes
  • Hail
  • Flooding
  • Importance of Siren/Warning Alerts
  • Preparedness (kits, safety plans, emergency plans)
  • Extreme Heat
  • Pet protection during disasters
